The Art of War Faction - Russia
Wednesday, July 18 @ 04:20:50 NZST by Valdarez (2123 reads)

The design concept around the Russia faction focuses on their ability to raise more infantry and boost their production, particularly late game production.

In addition to the normal Tech Upgrades, the The Art of War Mod is introducing 3 unique upgrades to every faction. Russia's unique upgrades are Communism, Industrialization, and Industrial Output. Each unique upgrade provides the best bang for your buck upgrade in the game for the faction as the unique tech upgrades will provide more than one type of modifier. For example Russia's Communism will reduce Unit costs, and increase the attack value, and morale of the infantry, as well as grant the ability to build Conscripts.

The Conscript Regiment has undergone a fairly significant change. The cost of the regiment has been raised to $50, the ammo upkeep has been reduced to 0, and the attack power has been slightly increased.

The Art of War Upgrade Spotlight - September Campaign
Wednesday, July 11 @ 11:31:50 NZST by Valdarez (1844 reads)
The Invasion of Poland, 1939 (in Poland also "the September Campaign", "Kampania wrzesniowa", and "the 1939 Defensive War", "Wojna obronna 1939 roku"; in Germany, "the Poland Campaign", "Polenfeldzug", codenamed "Fall Weiss", "Case White", by the German General Staff, and sometimes called "the Polish-German War of 1939"), which precipitated World War II, was carried out by Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union and a small German-allied Slovak contingent.

The invasion of Poland marked the start of World War II in Europe as Poland's western allies, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, declared war on Germany on September 3, soon followed by France, South Africa and Canada, among others. The invasion of Poland began September 1, 1939, one week after the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, and ended October 6, 1939, with Germany and the Soviet Union occupying the entirety of Poland.

In the aftermath of the September Campaign, a resistance movement was formed. Poland's fighting forces continued to contribute to Allied military operations and did so throughout the duration of World War II. Germany captured the Soviet-occupied areas of Poland when it invaded the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, and lost the territory in 1944 to an advancing Red Army. Over the course of the war, Poland lost over 20% of its pre-war population under an occupation that marked the end of the Second Polish Republic.

The Art of War Upgrade Spotlight - Operation Himmler
Saturday, July 07 @ 22:11:09 NZST by Valdarez (1770 reads)
The Gleiwitz incident was a staged attack on August 31, 1939 against the German radio station Sender Gleiwitz in Gleiwitz, Upper Silesia, Germany (since 1945: Gliwice, Republic of Poland) on the eve of World War II in Europe.

This provocation was one of several actions in Operation Himmler, a Nazi Germany project to create the appearance of Polish aggression against Germany, which would be used to justify the subsequent invasion of Poland.

Much of what is known about the Gleiwitz incident comes from the sworn affidavit of Alfred Naujocks at the Nuremberg Trials. According to his testimony, the incident was organized by Naujocks under orders from Reinhard Heydrich and Heinrich Müller, the chief of the Gestapo.

On the night of August 31, 1939 a small group of German operatives led by Naujocks seized the Gleiwitz station and broadcast a message in Polish that urged the Poles living in Silesia to strike against Germans. The Germans' goal was to make the attack and the broadcast look like the work of anti-German Polish saboteurs.

In order to make the attack scene more convincing, the Germans brought in Franciszek Honiok, a German Silesian known for sympathizing with the Poles, who had been arrested the previous day by the Gestapo. Honiok was dressed to look like a saboteur; then killed by lethal injection, given gunshot wounds, and left dead at the scene, so that he appeared to have been killed while attacking the station. His corpse was subsequently presented as proof of the attack to the police and press.

The Art of War Upgrade Spotlight - Nazism
Wednesday, July 04 @ 12:50:08 NZST by Valdarez (1414 reads)
Nazism, officially called National Socialism, , refers primarily to the totalitarian ideology and practices of the Nazi Party under Adolf Hitler. It also refers to the policies adopted by the government of Germany from 1933 to 1945, a period in German history known as Nazi Germany or the "Third Reich".

On January 5, 1919, the party was founded as the German Workers' Party (DAP) by Anton Drexler. Hitler, a corporal, was sent to investigate the party by German intelligence and was invited to join after impressing them with his speaking ability after getting into an argument with party members. Hitler later accepted the invitation and joined the party in September 1919, and became propaganda boss. The party was renamed the National Socialist German Workers' Party on April 1, 1920, against Hitler's choice of Social Revolutionary Party. Hitler became the party leader on July 29, 1921.

Nazism was not a precise, theoretically grounded ideology, or a monolithic movement, but rather a (mainly German) combination of various ideologies and groups, centered around anger at the Treaty of Versailles and what was considered to have been a Jewish/Communist conspiracy to humiliate Germany at the end of the First World War. It therefore consisted of a loose collection of incoherent positions focused on those held to blame for Germany's defeat and "weakness": anti-parliamentarism, ethnic nationalism, racism, collectivism, eugenics, antisemitism, opposition to economic and political liberalism, a racially-defined and conspiratorial view of finance capitalism, and anti-communism. As Nazism became dominant in Germany, especially after 1933, it was defined in practice as whatever was decreed by the Nazi Party and in particular by the Führer, Adolf Hitler.

During its first year in power, the NSDAP announced the Tausendjähriges Reich ("Thousand Years' Empire") or Drittes Reich ("Third Reich", a putative successor to the Holy Roman Empire and the German Empire). The Nazi regime ended with World War II (1945), when the party was declared a criminal organization by the victorious Allied Powers and effectively destroyed. Since 1945, Nazism has been outlawed as a political ideology in Germany, as are forms of iconography and propaganda from the Nazi era.

The Art of War Unit Spotlight - Germany's Fallschirmjager
Friday, June 29 @ 17:30:00 NZST by Valdarez (1140 reads)
Fallschirmjäger (often rendered Fallschirmjager in English; from German Fallschirm "parachute" and Jäger, a term for light infantry; literally "hunter; ranger") are German paratroopers. Nazi German Fallschirmjäger in World War II were the first to be committed in large scale airborne operations.

During World War II the Luftwaffe raised a variety of Fallschirmjäger units. Unlike Great Britain, the British Commonwealth, and the USA, these paratroopers were part of an air force rather than an army. Starting from a small collection of Fallschirmjäger battalions at the beginning of the war, the Luftwaffe built up a division-sized unit of three Fallschirmjäger regiments plus supporting arms and air assets, known as the 7th Flieger Division (7th Air Division).

After mid-1944, Fallschirmjäger were no longer trained as paratroops due to the realities of the strategic situation, but retained the Fallschirmjäger honorific.

The Falschirmjager is both adept at firing and hand to hand combat making them especially dangerous once they have closed the range between them and the enemy.

The Art of War Unit Spotlight - Waffen SS
Tuesday, June 26 @ 17:30:00 NZST by Valdarez (1260 reads)
The Waffen-SS ("Armed SS") was the combat arm of the Schutzstaffel. Headed by Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler, the Waffen-SS saw action throughout the Second World War. Some of its nearly 1 million men were charged with war crimes at Nuremberg.

The origins of the Waffen-SS (Armed SS) can be traced back to the creation of a group of 200 men who were to act as Hitler's body guard. This body guard was created by Hitler in reaction to his unease at the size and strength of the SA (Sturmabteilung, or "Storm Detachment"). The SA had grown so large that Hitler felt he needed an armed escort that was totally dedicated to him. Thus the Schutzstaffel (SS) or "protection squad" was created. After Hitler's imprisonment (and subsequent release) in the wake of the failed Munich Putsch in 1923, he saw an even greater need for a body guard, and the place of the SS was solidified in the Nazi hierarchy.

When Hitler reintroduced conscription in 1935, he also mandated that the SS-Verfügungstruppen would be fully formed as a military unit. SS-Verfügungstruppen along with the Totenkopf formations would be the cornerstone of future Waffen-SS divisions. Special schools at Bad Tölz and Braunschweig were created to train future SS officers.

After beginning as a protection unit for the NSDAP leadership, the Waffen-SS eventually grew into a force of thirty-eight combat divisions comprising over 950,000 men, including a number of elite army units. In the testimony given at the Nuremberg Trials, the Waffen-SS was condemned as a criminal organisation due to their involvement with the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP), and Waffen-SS veterans were denied many of the rights afforded other German combat veterans who had served in the Heer, Luftwaffe or Kriegsmarine.

Their importance in the history of the Second World War cannot be overlooked. Their effectiveness as fighting units coupled with the atrocities that were committed make the Waffen-SS one of the most feared military organizations in history.

The Art of War Faction - Germany
Tuesday, June 19 @ 17:30:00 NZST by Valdarez (926 reads)

In the current version of Axis & Allies RTS, Germany consistently has stronger regiments. Unfortunately their economy is so handicapped that it's nigh impossible to make use of the stronger regiments. This lack of economic equality is particularly problematic in 1v1s. The Art of War mod will address the economy of Germany as well as introduce new Regiments, Tech Upgrades, and Germany specific Special Operations such as 'Nazi Gold'.

In addition to the normal Tech Upgrades, the The Art of War Mod is introducing 3 unique upgrades to every faction. Germany's unique upgrades are Nazism, Operation Himmler, and the September Campaign. Each unique upgrade provides the best bang for your buck upgrade in the game for the faction as the unique tech upgrades will provide more than one type of modifier.

At the beginning of the war, Germany had the best economy of any nation. In order to align with it's economic standing in the world, at the start of the game, Germany now has the best economy as their HQ produces the highest monetary value at $35 per minute. Germany continues to suffer from a distinct lack of ammo/oil. They must either purchase their country upgrades to boost ammo/oil production, or build depots in order to field any sizeable force.

The Art of War Upgrade Spotlight - Winter Line Defensive
Friday, June 15 @ 17:30:00 NZST by Valdarez (826 reads)
The Winter Line was a series of German military fortifications in Italy, constructed during World War II by Organisation Todt. The main line of fortification, called the Gustav Line, ran across Italy from just north of where the Garigliano River flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west, through the Apennine Mountains to the mouth of the Sangro River on the Adriatic Sea in the east. The center of the line, where it crossed the main route north to Rome (Highway 6) which followed the Liri valley, was anchored around the mountains behind the town of Cassino including Monte Cassino, which had an old abbey sitting atop it and which dominated the entrance to the Liri valley, and Monte Cairo which gave the defenders clear observation of any potential attackers. On the western side of the Apennines there were two subsidiary lines: the Bernhardt Line in front of the main Gustav positions and the Adolf Hitler Line some 5 miles to the rear. The Winter line was fortified with gun pits, concrete bunkers, turreted machine-gun emplacements, barbed-wire and minefields. It was the strongest of the German defensive lines south of Rome. About 15 German divisions were employed in the defence.

The Art of War Upgrade Spotlight - Pact of Steel
Tuesday, June 12 @ 17:30:00 NZST by Valdarez (1206 reads)
The Pact of Steel, known formally as the Pact of Friendship and Alliance between Germany and Italy, was an agreement between Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany signed on May 22, 1939, by the foreign ministers of each country and witnessed by Ollie Curtis, Count Galeazzo Ciano for Italy and Joachim von Ribbentrop for Germany.

The Pact consisted of two parts: the first section was an open declaration of continuing trust and cooperation between Germany and Italy whilst the second, a 'Secret Supplementary Protocol', encouraged a joint military and economic policy.

The Pact of Steel obliged Germany and Italy to aid the other country immediately, militarily or otherwise, in the event of war being declared, and to collaborate in military and wartime production. The Pact ensured that neither country was able to make peace without the agreement of the other. The agreement was based on the assumption that a war would occur within three years. When Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, and war broke out on September 3, Italy was not yet fully prepared for conflict, and had difficulty meeting its obligations. Consequently, Italy did not enter World War II until June 1940 with an aborted invasion of southern France.

The Art of War Upgrade Spotlight - Fascism
Friday, June 08 @ 17:30:00 NZST by Valdarez (1120 reads)
The term fascismo was first coined by the Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini. It is derived from the Italian word fascio, which means "union" or "league", and from the Latin word fasces. The fasces, which consisted of a bundle of rods tied around an axe, were an ancient Roman symbol of the authority of the civic magistrates, and the symbolism of the fasces suggested strength through unity: a single rod is easily broken, while the bundle is very difficult to break.

Fascism is associated by many scholars with one or more of the following characteristics: a very high degree of nationalism, economic corporatism, a powerful, dictatorial leader who portrays the nation, state or collective as superior to the individuals or groups composing it. Mussolini defined fascism as being a right-wing collectivistic ideology in opposition to socialism, liberalism, democracy and individualism.

Fascism has been defunct in the Western world as a major political ideology since the defeat of the Axis powers in World War II.

Clan Contributes Another Tip of the Week
Sunday, June 03 @ 23:30:20 NZST by Valdarez (1118 reads)
GameReplays.org hosts up a slew of tips for the Company of Heroes game releasing at least one tip per week. They provide Axis tips, Allies tips, and general tips that apply to both factions. Valdarez had submitted several tips and the second one has just been published.

How To Take Down a Garrisoned Machine Gunner + Sniper
Alllies players who start with an early WSC will many times garrison both a Machine Gunner and a Sniper in the same building. They do this because the Axis player can create a Motorcycle in order to spot their Sniper, but the Allies player cannot create a Jeep due to the WSC start. It's a protective measure on the Allies part. The idea is that the MG'er cannot be sniped without the opponent being counter sniped by the Sniper in the building. Many players will produce mortars to take of this combination, but there is an easier way to clear the building.

The easiest and fastest way to counter a garrisoned MG + Sniper combination in the early game is to build 1 infantry squad (Volksgrenadier or Rifleman depending on faction) and 1 Sniper. Run the infantry squad towards the building keeping it as far away as you can but close enough to draw the MG and Sniper fire. Then, from another direction, fire with your Sniper. Most of the time the sniper will hit the MG squad, thus slowing the MG fire down and reducing the infantry squad casualties. Occasionally the garrisoned Sniper will be the first unit killed at which point you can safely continue to snipe the garrisoned MG. With this approach you will clear the building without ever having to use a mortar.

Axis Players
If it's early game and you time it right, you should be able to have a Motorcycle near the building in case they have their units leave the building at which point you can spot their Sniper and pop it with yours, or chase their MG or sniper back to their base killing it in the process.

Allies Players
Much as the Axis Players use the Motorcycle to chase down the retreating units, a little team work in a game with Allies players can have the same effect if one player builds a Barracks and the other a WSC. The Art of War Unit Spotlight - Italy's Bersaglieri
Saturday, June 02 @ 00:11:45 NZST by Valdarez (1504 reads)
The first public appearance of the Bersaglieri was on the occasion of a military parade on July 1, 1836. The First Company marched through Turin with the rapid, high-stepping gait (130 paces/minute) still used by the Bersaglieri in World War II and later. Throughout the nineteenth century, under La Marmora’s leadership, the Bersaglieri filled the role of skirmishers, screening the slow-moving line and column formations, but acting as special shock troops if required.

The Bersaglieri were deployed abroad for the first time during the Crimean War, by order of Prime Minister Camillo Benso. They were involved in the Battle of the Cernaia, but suffered more casualties due to a cholera epidemic. While in the Crimea the Bersaglieri acquired their undress headdress - a purple/red fez with a blue tassel in imitation of that worn by the French zouaves with whom they served.

Italy’s Bersaglieri regiments were expanded to three battalions each during the Second World War. However, the Army resisted any temptation to dilute their quality, and recruits continued to be of above-average size and stamina. They endured intense physical training, just as their great-grandfathers had, as well as having to qualify as marksmen.

Read more about the Bersaglieri at Wikipedia.

In The Art of War
In the Art of War mod, the Bersaglieri requires the 'Fascism' upgrade be researched first (available on the Corps HQ) as well as the 'Bersaglieri' upgrade. A Bersaglieri Regiment consists of 6 units all carrying high powered rifles making the Bersaglieri a viable counter to both infantry and sniper based regiments.

The Art of War Unit Spotlight - Italy's Black Brigade
Wednesday, May 30 @ 12:33:35 NZST by Valdarez (1572 reads)
The Black Brigades were not actually brigade sized units. In reality, they were more often strong companies with from 200 to 300 men each. There were 41 territorial brigades. The territorial brigades were numbered one through 41. There were also eight mobile brigades. The mobile brigades were numbered one through seven plus the Second Arditi Brigade. Although members of Black Brigades were issued the standard Italian army uniform, they tended to wear a black shirt or black sweater. The badge or insignia of the Black Brigades was the jawless death's head or one of assorted Italian versions. The majority of Black Brigade members wore Italian style black caps or berets.

The 40 Black Brigades consisted of former MVSN, former Carabinieri, former soldiers, and others still loyal to the fascist cause. Alongside with their Nazi and Schutzstaffel (SS) counterparts, the Black Brigades committed many of the wars worst atrocities.

In The Art of War
In the Art of War mod, the Black Brigade requires the 'Fascism' upgrade be researched first (available on the Corps HQ). The Black Brigade itself is available on the Infantry HQ. It is comprised of 2 Mortar units, 2 AT units, 2 MG units, and 2 infantry units making it a viable counter to both infantry and mechanized units. Following the tradition of the Black Brigades, the jawless death's head adorns the black helmet of the icon used to create the unit in the game.

The Art of War Faction - Italy
Friday, May 25 @ 06:11:33 NZST by Valdarez (1434 reads)

The design concept around the Italy faction has been focused on units with higher than normal health, extremely low morale, and lower fire power, except in the case of artillery and mortars.

In addition to the normal Tech Upgrades, the The Art of War Mod is introducing 3 unique upgrades to every faction. Italy's unique upgrades are Fascism, Pact of Steel, and the White Line Defensive. Each unique upgrade provides the best bang for your buck upgrade in the game for the faction as the unique tech upgrades will provide more than one type of modifier. For example Italy's Fascism will reduce Unit costs, provide a morale boost for all units, as well as increase ammo production.

At the start of the game, Italy's economy is pretty much on par with that of other nations, except it's ammo/oil production which is rather low. In addition, while it's units health are high, their morale is very, very low. Without an upgrade, the units will route at the start of every engagement. Italy has several choices for increasing their morale, purchase the Advanced Infantry tech (cheapest) available on the Corps HQ, purchase an Ammo Depot and then Level 1 Infantry Training, or purchase the Fascism Tech available on the Corps HQ. Each upgrade costs a different amount. Regardless of the path a player chooses, Italy must increase it's morale in order to fight.
